UK network EE have confirmed that the HTC First, the so-called Facebook Phone, will not be sold in the UK (reports Engadget, and others). This is due to Facebook looking to increase the customisation features of the Facebook Home experience before the HTC First goes on sale on the right hand side of the Atlantic.

Following on from reports of poor reviews, and a slow-down in the downloads of the Facebook Home experience for users to install on their own Android handsets, it doesn’t look good for Facebook on mobile as it stands.

That doesn’t mean that Facebook are going to give up on mobile. Not everyone who downloaded Facebook Home will have deleted the app from their Galaxy handset, or reverted their HTC First back to stock Android. It might be a smaller pool of users than Facebook might have hoped for, but Mark Zuckerberg’s mobile tiger team now have a group of active users working with the Facebook Home experience. As the team tweak the code, presumably through rather a lot of A/B testing on these users in terms of UI, application and information flow, and the ‘clickability’ of advertising.

More and more people are using their mobile phone as their primary connection to the Internet, and that means that the revenue streams of advertising are going to have to move as well. That’s why Facebook Home, alongside the Facebook mobile app for iOS, Android, BlackBerry, and Windows Phone, is an important part of Facebook.

It is the canary that will let Facebook know what works, and what does not work, for the end user. Right now, the suspended sales of the HTC First in the UK, along with the low downloads of the client from Google Play may point to a failure. I’m not so sure. Facebook now have a number of data points on their graph, and presumably the have the ‘went too far’ marker as well.

That, more than the sales of a few handsets, or some display ads on a new Samsung Galaxy device, is where the value is for Facebook. We’ll see the THC First in some form again. Facebook Home will continue to slowly evolve, brining in more people at every feature update to see what has changed and if it is usable yet.

And all the time Facebook are picking up as much user data as possible – because that’s what Facebook likes to do.

The original editorial from Engadget on the iPhone. Beautiful product at the time. I always give Apple credit for revolutionizing the smartphone market at the time with a smartphone that was like no other.

However, it did come at a hefty tag. And while it would have taken longer than Apple to do so, Google would have made the first Droid eventually; regardless, of the arrival of the iPhone or not.

Also, important note to mention. Ballsy move to make an all touchscreen device. Clearly, unheard of at the time....

Although Samsung hasn’t provided specific info on its upcoming smartphones that will run under the Tizen OS, more and more details on them are pouring in, the latest of which include photos with one of these smartphones, supposedly featuring model number GT-i8800.

The handset, said to sport the codename of Redwood, can be seen in the aforementioned photos (available courtesy of Tizen Greek Community) below, with Tizen 2.1 loaded on top.

The phone has already made headlines a few times before, and has even been confirmed by a User Agent Profile spotted on Samsung’s website (as GT-i8805), and is said to sport the codename of Redwood.

As Engadget notes, the leaked photos with the device unveil that it will arrive on shelves with S-Voice capabilities inside. No further details on the smartphone are available as of now.

'Meet Magura's eLECT, an electronic suspension fork for tech-savvy cyclists':

If you’re looking to trick out your bike, Magura’s eLECT might be the electronic suspension system you crave — if you’re willing to sacrifice optimal reaction time. Using a 3D accelerometer, the eLECT analyzes terrain with a 0.2 second window to adjust to how bumpy or smooth your ride is. At first glance, 0.2 seconds seems impressive, but it equates to a distance of 3.6 feet when traveling at 12.4MPH. Indeed, on challenging trails, a lot can happen in 3.6 feet, and eLect’s reaction time might be a touch on the slow side. While the system isn’t quite perfect, it does offer some sweet options. For example, cyclists can toggle between automatic and manual control of the compression damper using the accompanying Bluetooth remote. Magura’s eLECT isn’t the first of its kind — RockShox and Fox both have their own e-suspension systems — but it’s one of the lightest; the combined weight of the damper and remote is a mere 0.2 pound. There’s no word yet on availability or pricing, but you can check out the results of Bike Radar’s test ride at the source.

Ok so the more time I spend with my niece Sierra Faulkner the more i see how much she is like her older sister Vanessa Euwins. Like the last time we had her I told her there were clean cups in our dishwasher so she went over and opened up the Stove to get a cup. And then today we are eating at Braums and of course she was trying to talk and eat her chicken at the same time so she dipped her fried chicken strip into her chocolate milk shake instead of the ranch sauce. Totally things I could see Vanessa doing.

'LG may bring Google TVs to Korea, China soon; seeing 'good returns' in the US':

While Eric Schmidt’s proclamation that “most” new TVs would have Google TV embedded last year didn’t come true, LG stated today that it’s bringing the platform to more regions soon. The Korea Times reports an unnamed company executive at the KCTA Digital Cable Show stated the platform is yielding good returns, with average sales of 10,000 units per month. He went on to state that LG Electronics would bring Google TVs to Korea later this year — following the integrated IPTV boxes offered by LG Uplus — and China after that. Microsoft is apparently ready to follow Google TV’s lead with HDMI passthrough and TV overlays, we’ll see if it can gain traction at home and overseas before others catch up.
