NEWS & NOTICES 9th MARCH 2014
It was lovely to welcome Gauri Taylor-Nayar to Pontprennau for the first time this morning to lead our Family Worship Service. Our young Jabulani Choir, conducted by Trevor, opened the service with the beautiful “When I think about the cross”, and Gauri, moved to tears, commented what a blessed ministry it was to hear those children professing their faith in Jesus and the cross. Gauri’s theme was sin and forgiveness, and today’s readings were Genesis 2:15-17 & 3:1-7 (the Fall), Jeremiah 14:19-22 (“We acknowledge our wickedness, Lord. . . we have indeed sinned against you. Remember your covenant with us and do not break it. . Therefore our hope is in You”) and Psalm 32 (Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord does not count against them and in whose spirit is no deceit. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.” And You forgave the guilt of my sin.”).
Gauri began by asking if anyone had done anything wrong this week, and 10 “volunteers” - who were willing to admit publicly that they were sinners - were given a heavy tin or jar to represent the wrong they had done this week and were carrying around. The heavy tins and jars were held out at arm’s length while the reading from Genesis, telling of when sin first came into the world, was read. The tins felt increasingly heavy and became increasingly difficult to hold out, weighing us down. As Gauri took the tins from us, such relief was felt! When we carry sin around with us, we want to get rid of it - although sometimes we hang on to those feelings because we think that to let go might be worse than actually dealing with them. We can get rid of those feelings by giving the sin to God and asking for forgiveness as we confess: as we tell God what we have done wrong. This relief we experience as we receive God’s grace and forgiveness was echoed in our first song, “I am a new creation, no more in condemnation”, speaking of a joy that knows no limit, and a lightness in our spirit as we stand in the grace of God. Gauri encouraged us to hand over our sins - and our unforgiveness of others who have wronged us – to God.
Gauri pointed out that it can be really hard to forgive and to accept forgiveness, especially when the pain is too deep and we feel angry. We learnt the song ‘Soften my heart’, which Gauri commented had helped to get her through pain and anger in her life: you can hear it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ars7R0eo4Ic. “Soften My heart, Lord, soften my heart; from all indifference set me apart. To feel Your compassion, to weep with Your tears: come soften my heart, O Lord, soften my heart.” When we are in a dark place and we turn to God and hand it all over to Him – and sometimes that is the time when we do turn to God – then He will put His arms around us, share our burdens, weep with us, lift us, and then strengthen us.
Our starting point needs to be soft hearts – the glory comes from knowing that our Heavenly Father forgives us: He just does it. He takes us into His arms and He breathes HIS peace, which heals everything, into us – IF we let Him. C. S. Lewis said, “If God forgives us we must forgive ourselves, otherwise it's like setting up ourselves as a higher tribunal than Him." We need to forgive ourselves: if we can’t be gentle to ourselves, how can we be gentle to anyone else? Freely, freely we have received God’s love and grace and forgiveness – let’s give freely to others too.
You can have a listen to Gauri’s talks here – split up into 5 short parts (temporary position – soon to be on our website http://pontprennaucommunitychurch.org.uk/):

FOR OUR PRAYERS Let’s thank God for the love and forgiveness that He offers to us through His Son Jesus Christ, and let’s ask Him to help us to accept the forgiveness and freedom He offers, and to forgive those we need to forgive.
We bring to the Lord all those we know who are in need or suffering in any way, in our world and in our local community, and pray that they may know God’s love, grace, healing and reassurance in their lives, and be set free.
Please continue to pray for Liz, Jo and all those known to us who are finding life a struggle at the moment.
OUR PRAYER LINK CHURCH is Rumney Methodist Church. Please pray for the congregation and Probationary Minister, Rev Jarel Robinson-Brown: for God’s blessing and guidance for the future of this church, and that they may be a blessing to their community.
